• Keberkesanan
• Jangka Masa dan Berterusan
• Peluang Pembelajaran
• Interaksi/Pendedahan

Keberkesan. Apabila saya katakan keberkesanan saya ingin mengatakan bahawa jika sebuah kelab melakukan sebuah aktiviti, ia perlu mempunyai satu kesan jangka panjang. Contohnya apabila saya menyertai kelas bahasa inggeris, tujuannya supaya saya dapat memperbaiki kemahiran saya berbahasa inggeris. Jelas bukan?

Inilah konsep sustainability. Jangan asyik bergantung kepada orang lain.
Saya selalu lihat mana-mana persatuan kepimpinan berkata bahawa persatuan mereka dapat membentuk sifat pemimpin. Bagaimana?

Saya difahamkan ia disebabkan malu hendak menunjukkan keadaan masing-masing.

What the torch reveals…

As you all know, the Olympic Games is in full swing. And their opening ceremony was great. I really liked the drumming opening but not as much as the lighting of the torch gimmick. That guy was walking in the air!!! What a technical achievement done by the Chinese. Unfortunately, I didn’t get to see all of it. I only got to see the end, and the rest I saw on YouTube. But it was very hard to find there, so I only got to some part of it.

In the process of browsing YouTube I found a disturbing phenomenon. There were a lot of people who were criticizing and bashing the Chinese government for many things in relation to the Olympics. Some would deliberately point weaknesses and flaws of the opening ceremony, I assume to downplay the organizers efforts.

http://sports.yahoo.com/olympics/beijing/blog/fourth_place_medal/post/Some-Opening-Ceremony-fireworks-were-faked?urn=oly,99745

I can accept the fireworks were graphically enhanced by computers, but you don’t need to call it blatantly fake, it’s so childish just looking for something to badmouth at. It’s not a big deal. The same blogs again attacks another mistake of the Chinese organizers, which were about the weather control system.

http://sports.yahoo.com/olympics/beijing/blog/fourth_place_medal/post/China-s-weather-modification-plan-hits-a-snag?urn=oly,99942

Even worst, there are people who make comments on the Chinese government about communism, Tibet issue, even stupid insensitive accusations and remark about China, the people, their culture and history.

http://www.youtube.com/comment_servlet?all_comments&v=WZTJm8KDWYU&fromurl=/watch%3Fv%3DWZTJm8KDWYU%26feature%3Drelated

Most of these people I believe consist of ethnocentric and ignorant westerners. AIESEC teaches me not to discriminate, and I agree. But it is so obvious the China bashing is done by so many Europeans. Just follow the link below; so many parties are bashing the organizers tirelessly. I just don’t know what China did to them to incur such treatment.

http://news.search.yahoo.com/search/news?ei=UTF-8&toggle=1&fr=yfp-t-501&cop=mss&p=fake%20fireworks

HOWEVER, I must make it clear I am not implying this negative trait to all westerners. But sharing my concern that there are a big number of people in western countries who portray an uncomfortable tendency to insult, under appreciate and refuse to give credit to the organizers of the Olympics. This is a disheartening thing to happen at an event that is supposed to unite us together through sports. What scares me the most is that is our civilization are increasingly globalized and connected, yet in another way we have become more divided than ever. This is what the torch has revealed to me…

Creating synergy in the student organization

Creating synergy in the student organization
I have seen so many challenges and problems within organization run by university students, so I would like to share with you, my experiences concerning this issue. Below are the four main points:

• Personal & organizational goal alignment
• Education plan
• Job Description
• Culture of learning & Empowerment

Personal & Organizational goal alignment

It is important that both the individual and the organization have the same goals. Let me give you a comparison. Let’s observe a sports secretariat. Ali is an individual who is athletic in nature and loves to participate in sports. At the same time, Abu is the head of Ali’s sports secretariat who wants his secretariat to win all inter-college sports activities. So naturally, these two people will meet together, and Ali would join the secretariat. Ali and Abu (individuals) would then practice and compete in sports, which if they win would achieve the goal of their college’s secretariat (organization) to win all inter-college activities. So, you see there is a symbiosis between the individual and the organization. So what does this mean for other clubs and secretariat? It means before you are to start any activities, you must make sure that what the organization wants is the same as what the members want. If you do not, this will happen. Amirul wants to be an entrepreneur, he wants to learn how to make business plan, look for opportunities and network with people but the entrepreneurship club he joins only sells snack and refreshments or do car washing as their main activity. So there is a clash of expectation.
So what can you do as the president of the club can do? I would suggest conducting an expectation setting session. Basically, it is just a session where you survey what your members expect of the club. This way you know what your members want. I believe are biggest asset or customers are our asset. So we must listen to them first and not are advisors or higher management in our colleges because they are the ones who will continue our efforts in the future. Without them, your club will die because there is no one to run it.

Education plan

A club or a student organization is represented by what activity that the club or organization does. And people judge that organization by judging the activity that the organization has. For example, if I were to go to a competition held organized by college X and I find it boring and useless, my impression of college X will also be bad. So, your activities must me of reasonable quality. How do you know your activity is good enough? I will soon write an article titled “ciri-ciri aktiviti kelab/persatuan yang cemerlang” Please refer to it. If the activities are not good enough, then members will see it as a waste of time, they would not want to join, then people have to force them, then the management and the members will fight.
An education plan is basically, a series of activities that are planned for the whole year (at least a semester) way before the semester stats. One problem with organizations especially MTP, is that they lack consistency with their activities. And also their activities are not impactful and worthwhile for members to join. This is because a lack of planning. A good education plan must be long term. It must be consistent and relevant to want the members want. If I am joining an entrepreneurship club, I want to learn how to make a business plan, network and etc. I don’t want to jual kerepek, do carwash and stuff like that.
One very simple model is this. One: Is you teach and share with your juniors. Two: The juniors are given an opportunity to practice what they learn in a project. Three: Finally, the juniors are experienced and will be able to teach and share with their juniors next year. . For example, my college activities were always consists of speakers who were not student. No one was capable. So, if there is no speaker, so the club dies? We must learn to teach ourselves, so that we can teach other. Do not rely on others too much.

Job Description

If somebody from a leadership club come ask me whether I would like to join or not, I would ask why. Then he would probably answer, “So you can sharpen your leadership skills”. Then I would ask how? And he would answer, “By joining our camps and projects”. The thing is we all have been to hundreds of camp. But I would like to talk about the projects. How would joining a project sharpen your leadership skills? You don’t see everybody joining leadership club become leaders like Mahathir or sumthin like that. This all depends on the job description of the organization. It’s important that what they do is what they want to learn. For example, ajk makanan for an annual dinner, what would they learn, how would that experience contribute to their professional development. Another thing is that MTPs always have so many posts. Naib president satu, naib president dua and so many more. T there is no clear difference in the Job Description. At the end of the day, you hear president passing their work to their naib presidents. And they fight, and then the organization crumbles.
The biggest problem with the MTPs is that they are not educated about team management and conflict management skills. They would go to all kinds of camps but I just see no improvements. The system is training politicians and talkers but not thinkers and leaders. You see, the system is not educating what the students need. This brings me to my final point.

Culture of learning and empowerment

At my first of Year University, I went to an entrepreneur secretariat meeting. And one of the suggestions was to do a car wash, which I think is absurd. And even till now, you see people churning stupid ideas like that. But the saddest thing is that these people are people who are majoring in entrepreneurship at FEP. This is their field, their course. They should know better but alas their definition of entrepreneurship is selling snacks and doing a car wash. Pathetic. I am a student of FEP, business, management and leadership is our field. We should know the best in UPM. We would know what to do in our activities, our projects would be the best one organized by students. This happened because a lack of the culture of learning. We don’t take an effort to find knowledge; we are lazy and easily satisfied. We are living in the information age, a lot of things we can find on the internet. For example, a human development secretariat can do a personality test as one of their activity which is easily obtainable on the internet. It just needs some time and patience. It’s not much different from doing your assignments.
For those who do appreciate the culture of learning, however, they are not empowered to use them. Meaning they are not given the power or resources to do so. One entrepreneurship secretariat I knew was forced to do an agrobio carnival or sumthin like that. The issue had no relevance what so ever with students. And the intended program was battle-of-the-bands and longest cake record breaking activity. The carnival was never made a reality. You see, youth must be given the freedom to do what they are interested in. The most successful projects in UPM are done by those who are relatively free from bureaucracy, and UPM helps them rather than the project asks UPM for help. Only when the members are empowered, they would do a great job, be proud of their work and come back for more.
As a closing, creating synergy in an organization is about understanding your members and organization, creating a compromise with the two and fulfilling those requirements. It is the people who make the organization. Hope this helps anyone who is reading this. And for those who helped teach me in the past. My gratitude is eternal.

Why beyond uni?

Why beyond uni?

As you know by now, the address for this blog is beyonduni.blogspot.com, but why?
Not long ago I realized there are lots of things I’ve been saying about the events occurring around me. So I thought why would I only talk, why don’t I put it in a more productive form. A place where I can share what I think, and see the response of others. This allows a medium of interaction which I value very much. Which I mention in the posts “3 ways of receiving wisdom” So I plan to post as much of my experiences and views on such things as philosophy, politics, self-development and comments/criticism which I feel obligated to share with the world. “Obligated”…I feel like Superman now. LOL.

Anyway, why beyond uni? It’s because I want to share my views about things going on beyond my university horizon. Students care too much about exams, merits, and club activities (which is good depending on how it is done). Our university life is so short, so I am preparing myself to the ever-challenging world, a world that is not clear as black and white but shades of grey. By doing so, I hope you can share your views, and together we will be more prepared of the consequences to come.
Sometimes, I get scared what tomorrow brings, but I know I have people I can count on to embrace it together. Till next time…

Vision
To be the number one source to find student-issue related articles

Mission
We are providing university students with relevant, accurate and objective news and analysis of student related issues from studying concerns to student-body activities. We strive with the desire to excel, passion to care for our university and the desire to actively shape our university life.

Kritikan Yang Dibenarkan

What do you believe?

Don’t worry, I won’t be talking about religion or anything like that but it is tempting to do so. I really like controversial subjects. Don’t we all? Anyway I would like to share with you all something that I realized not long ago. So just bear with me and see where I am going with this blog.

Last year or so, there was a short supply of cooking oil. And what really happened is that when the Malaysian population thought that oil is going to be scarce, they bought cooking oil more than they really need which creates an artificial deficit meaning if everybody bought just enough for themselves, then there would be sufficient supply. They believed that oil is going to be scarce and as a result of believing that, then the oil does become scarce.

Again about last year, Kenya had their election. But unfortunately there are some disagreements over the outcome. I do not want to comment on the politics because I do not know the situation. However, the point I am telling here, even though there is a democracy process but if people do not trust or believe the election process than it is futile. Right now, a certain de facto leader of a party is trying to win a parliamentary seat if I’m not mistaken. He is stating that there will be mass rigging of the results of this by election. When the outcome is revealed, and he fails to get the seat, what would happen if he and his supporters do if they don’t trust the system?

And last but not least, I would like to comment on spirituality or religion. I’m bound to touch on this matter sooner or later...lol. I would say it is not surprising for human to hate, kill and discriminate on the grounds of religion. Sometimes, even after debating and rationalizing with them, they will still conform to their ways, because they so blindly believe their religion. Is that a bad thing? Even though thinking about divine existence might be out of our reach, but god gave us a brain to try and ponder his greatness and ultimately appreciate our blessings not to blindly take it without considerations. But if they believe it so much, they would do everything to make sure the status quo is remained intact.

What do these three scenarios signify? What am I trying to tell you? These three events show that when the individual believe it becomes true. When you believe, you act. And when you act, you will act accordingly to make it a reality. So it will happen sooner or later but as long you believe in something it will come true. Because when you stop believing, you will stop doing and when that happens I’m sure your beliefs won’t come true. So... what do you believe?

3 ways you can receive wisdom

I made a post earlier about the 3 mistakes you cannot do in your university life. And the second point is “Not listening”, let me refine that more and say “Not listening to wisdom” This post is about how you can enrich your mind become a more mature thinker. To acquire yourself with the relevant knowledge and thinking skills that can help you in your career. I’m also discussing certain bad habits that may prevent you from getting wisdom.

Wisdom can be obtained from the people around you. Work together with as diverse bunch of people as possible. These are how you can enrich your mind, making yourself a better thinker. If you are not an intelligent, you work together with intelligent people. If you are not creative, work with creative people so you can understand the way they think and slowly adapt and improve the way you think. Don’t look down at what are your friends saying. Not long ago, I and some of my friends gave some input on how a certain project were done and predicted some problems however it fell on deaf ears. I feel that our experience was not appreciated and was quite disappointed. I feel we should listen (especially those who are more experienced than us), comprehend and finally choose whether to listen or not, at least take the time to listen. In an unrelated event, there are even people who do not want to listen to others because they are better than others; I have seen an acquaintance of mine so proud of his post at my college’s MTP that he disregards the input of others. I have seen dictators in student organization trying to force everything to his will without discussion. Wisdom can come from anywhere. By engaging with diverse people, not only it helps you to expose yourself to the different kinds of thinking but the experience also builds character.

“Intelligence plus character - that is the goal of true education”
Martin Luther King, Jr.

This man is a wise man, he said intelligence not knowledge, he understands that you can memorize whole books but can still not be intelligent. You must understand that all knowledge I merely tools to solve a problem. You learn engineering so we can build with less. You learn accounting to manage your finance. You lean chemistry to create. But who is using those knowledge? How do you determine the outcome of using that knowledge? it is you. The knowledge you learn are merely tools for you to use. It is the man who makes the difference.

Wisdom can be obtained through experience. By putting yourself in a variety of situations, you acquire more experience and ultimately you can be more confident in your future endeavors. That is why I stress the importance of trying in the “3 Biggest Mistake you can do in University” article. If you’re not trying, you’re not achieving. When you're not achieving, you’re not learning. Please go explore he world and seek new experiences and challenge your world view. That is why I do not like joining my college’s activities. There is nothing new, no new experience or perspective. It’s the same thing you do at high school. We as university students must throw away our high school mentality and strive to have a corporate and professional mentality. Even something as simple as our annual dinner, can be a good experience if we organize professionally by learning how to use tools used by professional event planners. We must provide ourselves with wider horizons. I do not want to go back to high school chores. We are way past that. Soon, I will share with you how to identify a good student organization that will provide good experiences.

Wisdom can be gained by first having the love of learning. This is something I cannot teach but you must take the initiative. Malaysian students just don’t have the drive to learn more. We are too exam oriented. There is more to life than this. There is so much knowledge in the world. I’m not just talking about knowledge in books; I’m also talking about our failure to implement what we learn. Last year, my college’s entrepreneurial secretariat wanted to do a car wash service. Is that what entrepreneurship is? We entrepreneurship majors in my college, is that all what they see of the subject. Even I am interested in entrepreneurship but I don’t want to wash cars or jual kerepek. I want to learn how to write business plans, learn how to manage my finances and find opportunities. Go see www.eyln2008.com for a good project. My colleges are mostly from FEP. Leadership and Management are supposed to be our field. Other faculties do not have this advantage. Do we all have no idea what to do? Are we doomed to sell Dadih all our lives? I will elaborate more on this in another post (emo aldy now). Take the initiative to know what is being done by others by asking around, searching through the internet, anything. There is so much to learn from the world. Go explore it.

Let me summarize by saying that wisdom and inspiration are abundant but are easily obtainable. And what makes them easier or harder to obtain depends on you, depend how open-minded you are, and how much you’re willing to accept criticism, let go your ego, to be proactive.

Disclaimer: Though I made several references of events and people in my life, I do not intend to badmouth anyone. I am saying this to share with you all the experiences and my perspective of life.

3 Biggest Mistake you can do in University

The 3 biggeste mistake in university is:

  • Not Trying

  • Not Listening

  • Taking a part time job

Not Trying

“Not trying” means that you just stop doing something half-way. I see a lot of people give-up in so many things so easily. Always keep moving, don’t give up. There is so much you can learn if you just keep going, even if it is a day longer. Don’t give excuses, don’t procrastinate (though I tend too because I’m quite lazy in nature…lol) and don’t blame others for your weak performance. The worst thing you can do to yourself is do nothing, and then you will learn and achieve nothing. If you are not performing a job well, the least you can do is to keep trying. For your sake, for your reputation’s sake and even your team’s sake. At least, don’t let others suffer the result of your mistakes or you giving up half-way. In university or even in life, our most valuable thing is our experience and how do you get it? By keep on trying to achieve more. I had a junior, he complained and gave excuses about why he wasn’t performing, but he still had so much time left. I didn’t like that but the lesson I’m trying to share here is that every day, you wake up with a choice, which are; to moan how sucky your life are or choose to get the best off it. So what’s your choice?

Not Listening

“Not listening” means that a lot of students do not have the love of learning or the culture of appreciating knowledge. Just look at our culture of reading here in Malaysia. I’m starting to read books but a lot of them are expensive. Maybe I can discuss something about it later. Anyway, learning can come in many forms. It can be from your lecture, books, the internet, practical experience from a student club’s project, even opinions from your friends and families. Wisdom can come from anywhere. You must have not only have knowledge or just a degree but you also need something more. You need the attitude to learn more and the attitude to achieve excellence.

'Intelligence plus character - that is the goal of true education.' - Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr

This man is a wise man, he said intelligence not knowledge, he understands that you can memorize whole books but can still not be intelligent. I think I will discuss this more in some other posts.

Taking A Part Time Job

“Taking a part time job” means well…taking a part time job la. We are students; we have a responsibility to ourselves and our parents. Do not waste our time on part time jobs unless we are so short of money until you have no money to eat. Doing a part time job and doing extracurricular activities are 2 different things. You learn something from doing club activities, I know some jobs do train you, which is good but please don’t do menial jobs. When you work part-time you are selling your time. RM4 an hour, is that how much one hour of your life costs to you. And also don’t do things like MLM la, jual kerepek and roti la, please. Even if you are entrepreneur there are better ways, which I hope to discuss in the future. Remember, the most valuable thing you have now is your time, not your energy. Use your time well because time=experience is good and time=energy is bad.
